Carbon dating solar flares

Player
Short video description
Researchers have shown that tree rings contain evidence of past solar storms , and could be used to more accurately date important events throughout history, such as the timeline of the Maya culture and ancient Egypt. Just like a fingerprint, the distinctive signature of a solar storm could act as time stamp in timber, papyrus, baskets, and any other living plants or organic material from the past. The idea is that if scientists can spot the radiation signature of a solar storm in a particular ancient object such as a papyrus scroll, they'll be able to accurately match it to when the event occurred in the tree ring record, giving the precise year that the item was made. Solar storms are a natural parts of the Sun's cycle, and they occur when huge amounts of radiation blast out of the Sun in a stream that can reach Earth's atmosphere. Because carbon decays at a more or less predictable rate, by seeing how much of it is left compared to carbon, researchers can estimate within 50 to years how old something is. But now the team has put forward a more precise dating technique by looking for these carbon spikes, and using the tree rings to count back the year it occurred.

The Sun is changing the rate of radioactive decay, and breaking the rules of chemistry

Scientists believe that the number of spots on the sun cycles over time, reaching a peak—the so-called Solar Maximum—every 11 years or so. Some studies indicate that sunspot activity overall has doubled in the last century. The apparent result down here on Earth is that the sun glows brighter by about 0. It emanates from the sun and influences galactic rays that may in turn affect atmospheric phenomena on Earth, such as cloud cover.

Mysterious radiation burst recorded in tree rings

What goes on in the sun can only be observed indirectly. Sunspots, for instance, reveal the degree of solar activity -- the more sunspots are visible on the surface of the sun, the more active is our central star deep inside. Even though sunspots have been known since antiquity, they have only been documented in detail since the invention of the telescope around years ago.

By: Marshall Brain. A child mummy is found high in the Andes and the archaeologist says the child lived more than 2, years ago. How do scientists know how old an object or human remains are? What methods do they use and how do these methods work? In this article, we will examine the methods by which scientists use radioactivity to determine the age of objects, most notably carbon dating.
