Island of Elba

Once you get to the island of Elba just off the coast of Italy’s mainland you just might want to stay and for good reason.

Elba has really turned into more of a Mediterranean paradise as it’s beautiful beaches and lovely hillsides have been upgraded with the latest technologies without messing up the island’s natural beauty and elegance.  Just the idea of walking along those sunny beaches with your toes in the sand while sipping on some fine wine is enough to make you just want to leap up and go there now.

This Tuscany island is only 12 miles or 20 kilometers from the town of Piombino.  It’s the largest of the Tuscan islands in the Tuscan Archipelago but is the third largest island in Italy with it’s big sisters Sicily and Sardinia topping the list.

There are eight municipalities so you’ll be having your pick of places to see when you get there and with about 30,000 plus inhabitants you won’t go lonely but you’ll be far from crowded out.  This is a province of Livorno and it has the communes of Marciana, Marciana Marina, Rio Marino, Porto Azzurro, Rio nell’Elba, and Portoferraio, Capoliveri, and Camp nell’Elba.

It’s history goes back almost 3,000 years and was even the place where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to and in a turnabout it was the French who in 1944 liberated the island from the Germans.  It’s had it’s share of invaders from the Etruscans to the Gauls and you’ll see that combination of cultures in the sights and villages that dot the island.
